I am guessing you saw Obama’s speech last night about Afghanistan. I am a progressive guy, and while I think it sucks that we are not out of there already and wish it was over (I could go on about how this clusterfuck is all Bush/Cheney’s fault, but we all know that by now), I will give him the benefit of the doubt.
Because, unlike liberal die-hards, I realize 3 things:
1. Sometimes fighting is necessary.
2. Obama knows a lot more about what’s going on over there than we know.
3. I know that even though he is not perfect and will make mistakes, Obama is a rational, intelligent, pragmatic, moral person with the best intentions for the country. He is the one, single person in the entire country who had to make this decision. Think about that pressure, that responsibility. I know Obama doesn’t take it lightly. And if any one person has to make this decision, I think he has as good a shot at getting it right as anyone. Nobody knows for sure what will happen, what to do. But also, nobody knows the facts and intelligence better than him. And he’s a fucking smart guy.
I am sure you have already seen and heard many uber-liberals ripping apart Obama. I understand people who don’t agree with him. Personally, I don’t know if I do. I understand people who don’t want to be there any longer. I sure as hell don’t. But I am giving him the benefit of the doubt because I am smart enough to know that I DON’T KNOW SHIT about the situation over there. And just about 100% of Americans don’t either. Just because people are liberals doesn’t make them smart. Smarter than Republicans, yes, but not necessarily smart. It doesn’t take much to be smarter than Republicans these days. (I will always qualify these statements by saying that “Republicans” doesn’t mean true classic conservatives; it means radical religious-fueled crazy racist scared nutjobs, which is what the Republican Party has become).
The thing that bothers me is that a lot of these liberals who are slamming his decision think that we should NEVER fight a war. Believe me, I wish we never had to, but sometimes it is sadly inevitable. And I know that I don’t know enough to know for sure if this is one of those times or not. So I’m going to put my faith in my President and hope that he does.
Bottom line – this situation is such a mess that there is NO good solution. So Obama has no good choices to make. Based on what he knows, I assume from his plan that he thinks trying to finish the mission that should have been but was abandoned by GW is a better choice than leaving right away. It’s not what he WANTS to do; it’s what he HAS to do based on having to choose between two supremely shitty choices.
I read this blog today and it is the most intelligent commentary/opinion I have yet read or heard about this so far. You should read it.
I have no idea if he is doing the right thing. I hope that he is.
But regardless, I still have faith in Obama.
